Understanding Your NDIS Plan: A Guide for Participants

Your NDIS plan can feel overwhelming at first. This guide breaks down what's in it, how funding works, and how to make the most of your supports — in plain language.

What is an NDIS Plan?

An NDIS plan is a document that outlines the supports and funding you've been approved for under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It's personalised to your goals, your needs, and your circumstances — no two plans are the same.

Your plan is developed during a planning meeting with the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) or one of their partners. It's based on what you tell them about your life, your goals, and the barriers you face. The plan then sets out how much funding you receive and what categories it falls under.

The Three Funding Categories

NDIS funding is divided into three broad categories, sometimes called "budgets":

1. Core Supports

This is the most flexible category. Core supports help you with everyday activities — personal care, community access, household tasks, and transport. If you receive in-home care from Evia Health, most of this falls under core supports.

Core supports are generally flexible, meaning you can move funding between the four sub-categories (Assistance with Daily Life, Transport, Consumables, and Assistance with Social and Community Participation) as your needs change.

2. Capacity Building Supports

These supports help you build skills and independence over time. They might include things like support coordination, therapy, employment support, or training to develop daily living skills. Unlike core supports, capacity building funding is usually tied to specific line items and can't be moved between categories.

3. Capital Supports

Capital supports cover higher-cost items like assistive technology, home modifications, or specialist disability accommodation (SDA). These are one-off or periodic investments rather than ongoing services.

How Plan Management Works

How your plan is "managed" determines how you pay for services and how much flexibility you have in choosing providers:

  • Self-managed: You manage the funding yourself — you choose any provider (registered or not), pay invoices, and keep records. Maximum flexibility, but more administration.
  • Plan-managed: A plan manager handles the financial side — paying invoices, tracking budgets, and providing statements. You can still choose any provider, but the admin burden is handled for you.
  • NDIA-managed (agency-managed): The NDIA pays providers directly. You can only use NDIS-registered providers. Less flexibility, but no admin at all.

Getting the Most From Your Plan

Here are some practical tips for making the most of your NDIS plan:

  • Know your goals. Your plan is built around your goals. The clearer you are about what you want to achieve, the better your supports will be tailored.
  • Use your funding. Unspent funding doesn't roll over. If you're not using your supports, talk to your provider or support coordinator about adjusting your services.
  • Keep records. Especially if you're self-managed. Good records make plan reviews smoother and help demonstrate why you need the supports you have.
  • Prepare for your plan review. Before your annual review, think about what's working, what's not, and whether your goals have changed. Bring evidence — letters from therapists, reports from carers, or notes about how your needs have evolved.
  • Ask for help. If your plan feels confusing, a support coordinator can help you understand it and connect you with the right providers.
